No one likes to open their dishwasher and find the dishes are still dirty. A dishwasher is meant to be a time-saver. A dishwasher that leaves your dishes dirty is a major headache. If your dishwasher isn’t getting your dishes clean, here are several items to check.

Water Inlet Valve

Water enters the dishwasher when the water inlet valve is opened. If the valve is blocked or is defective, not enough water will flow into the dishwasher and the dishes will not be cleaned properly. A hammering sound coming from your dishwasher is a sign your water inlet valve may be faulty. A broken inlet valve will need to be replaced by a dishwasher repair technician.

Blocked Spray Arms

The spray arms distribute water to all the dishes in your dishwasher. The spray arms can become clogged by food particles or mineral build-up. When the spray arms are blocked, the water can’t spray properly and your dishes will not get clean. Follow these steps to clean the spray arms:

  • Unscrew the center bolt to remove the spray arms.
  • Soak the spray arms for at least 20 minutes in a mixture of one part water to one part vinegar.
  • Use a sponge to wipe the arms clean, then rinse with clean water.
  • Reattach the spray arms to the dishwasher.

Faulty Soap Dispenser

If your dishwasher’s soap dispenser isn’t working correctly, the detergent may not reach your dishes at the right time. It’s common for the soap dispenser’s door to become jammed with grease and debris. Clean your soap dispenser and its springs with a small brush. Make sure the door hinge isn’t broken or loose. If the door’s spring is broken, it will need replacing.
