How to Replace the Door Latch in Your Maytag Front Load Washer: Error Code F5E1

The F5E1 error code on your Maytag MHW5500FW0 Front Load Washer is a door latch error. The repair for this error is pretty simple, requiring replacement door latch part WPW10443885, a small flathead screwdriver, a T20 Torx screwdriver, a spring clamp, a pair of needle nose pliers, and (optional) spring pliers (383EER4001A)
Before you begin your washer repair, be sure you have unplugged the appliance.

How to Replace the Door Latch in Your Front Load Washer

1. Remove the Bellow Spring and Fold in the Bellow

Open the washer door and release the bellow spring from around the bellow using a flat screwdriver to pull the spring up and over the bellow. Once the spring is removed, set it aside and fold the bellow in to keep it out of the way. You may need to rest something onto the bellow to hold it down.

2. Remove the Door Lock

Remove the two screws from the top and bottom of the door lock. Reaching into the dryer, observe the door lock unit. You will see two connectors plugged in at the top. Remove the large connector first. Next, remove the small connector by lifting the tab that locks in place. The smaller connector may be harder to pull out. Rock it back and forth or gently use a small, thin tool to help slide it out of the door lock unit, being careful not to damage the connector head.

3. Install the New Door Lock

Attach the small connector to the pack of your new door lock unit. Next, plug in the large connector. Rotate the door lock back into position. Reinstall top and bottom torque screws.

4. Reinstall the Bellow and Spring Clamp

Ensure the inner rim of the bellow is snugly fitted over the front panel lip. Position the bellow spring with the spring toward the top of the bellow and carefully stretch it around and back into place. You can use outer spring pliers to stretch the spring. Alternatively, you can use spring clamps to hold the ring to the front panel while you use a pair of needle nose pliers to stretch the spring, creating enough to seat the spring into the bellow groove. Need more help? Contact Central Valley Appliance for comprehensive appliance repair service.
