Fix a Non-Dispensing Ice Maker by Replacing a Broken Recess Spring in Your GE Refrigerator

Has your GE refrigerator model GSL25JFPBS stopped dispensing ice? If the answer is yes, don’t worry, a malfunctioning ice maker isn’t necessarily the problem, instead, a broken door recess spring could be behind your refrigerator’s dispensing issue. The spring is part of the water and ice dispenser assembly, which is located on the front of your freezer door. A damaged recess spring will prevent the dispenser door from opening and closing, meaning ice won’t exit the dispenser when you press the dispenser lever. Luckily, replacing the recess spring is a fairly easy repair.

How to Replace the Recess Spring in Your GE Refrigerator

1. Using a putty knife, carefully pry the dispenser assembly trim off the front of the freezer door.
2. Remove the main control panel by lifting the bottom of the component up. Once you’ve taken the panel off the mounting assembly, tilt the component forward and disconnect the wire harnesses running to the back of the control panel.
3. Unthread the screws securing the mounting assembly to the front of the freezer door, and then remove the assembly from the door.
4. Now that the mounting assembly is out of the way, you can access the dispenser door recess spring. To do so, loosen the left screw that secures the door recess crank. With the left screw still attached, unthread the right screw and then remove it. At the same time, take off the small bracket connected to the screw.
5. With the left screw loose and the right screw removed, lift up the ice door and remove it from the dispenser assembly.
6. Slide the damaged recess spring off the dispenser door and toss it in the garbage.
7. Next, install the new recess spring by placing it on the recess crank.
8. Take the dispenser door back to the refrigerator and start reinstalling it by aligning the hook on the right side of the door recess crank with the ice dispenser solenoid. Then, insert the left side of the crank into the left mounting bracket and tighten the screw.
9. Finish reinstalling the dispenser door by replacing the bracket and screw that secures the recess crank on the doors right side.
10. Reinstall the ice dispenser assembly bracket, and then reconnect the main control panel by reattaching the wire harnesses to the back of the components. Once the wires are connected to the correct terminals, carefully push the control panel onto the mounting assembly. Finish up by replacing the dispenser assembly trim.
