Washer Repair

Why a Washer is Leaking from the Bottom?

Did you come back to your laundry room to find a puddle underneath your washer? Unfortunately, this isn’t a one-time occurrence. If your washer is leaking, it is an indication of a problem, but what should you be checking first?

For your own safety, before investigating a washer leak, you should disconnect the washer from the electricity.

Check the Hoses and Connections

Most commonly, when a washer is leaking, it is not actually the appliance, but rather the water hoses or areas where those hoses connect. This means you will want to pull your washer out and check for leaks in those areas. You may not immediately see water dripping, but you will feel moisture if there is a leak.

Drain Hose

In some cases, if the drain hose of the washer is not properly adjusted in the standpipe, it can result in leaks. Unfortunately, if leaks are coming from this area, you will highly want to consider getting a professional to adjust it. The hose needs to be secured in a specific position and even doing things like making it airtight can cause further problems.

Drain Pump

If all the above have checked out, you will want to check the drain pump. It is exceptionally rare that the drain pump itself will start leaking unless it has had some physical trauma that damaged it. Damage like leaving loose change in your pockets when washing your clothes.

However, similar to the hoses and connections that ferry the water in, so, too, can the drain hose and connections leak.

Again, you may not see visible water leaking from these areas, but you will still be able to feel moisture. These areas were designed to not leak, so when functioning normally, they will feel completely dry to the touch.
