If your washing machine, a
Maytag PAVT234AWW Top Load Washer, for example, isn’t spinning and draining, it pays to consider the simplest solutions first.
First, if the washer is not spinning and draining, pay attention to what’s in the washer. Bulky items like bedding can become off balance and cause the unit to stop working. Redistribute the load manually, then set the unit to the drain/spin function to drain the water and (hopefully!) spin. If this works, you’ve likely found the problem.
If it doesn’t work, check the “tub to pump” hose. This is a short section contained within the unit, near the bottom. If it gets kinked or otherwise damaged, water will not drain during the spin cycle. Before inspecting, unplug the washer and shut off the water. Then remove the access panel at the back left of the unit with a 5/16″ nut driver. This will reveal the pump at the bottom, the length of hose running up and out of it with the tub at the top. You may need to remove the hose before fully being able to inspect it.
To disconnect the tub to pump hose, you’ll need to remove the spring clamps. One is at the pump connection, the other at the tub connection. A pair of spring clamp pliers is ideal, but ordinary pliers will suffice. Remove the clamp on the pump first, then disconnect the hose. Repeat for the connection at the tub.
Inspect the hose, making sure it is straight and unobstructed. To reinstall, begin at the tub connection. Be sure to fully seat the hose on the tub receptacle. Then open the clamp and position it entirely on the receptacle before letting it close in position. Repeat for the pump connection. After reinstalling the access panel plug the machine in, turn on the water and give your washer a test.
