The timer in your Maytag washer model
LAT9605AAE controls when your appliance advances from one function to the next. A malfunctioning timer can cause your appliance to stop mid-cycle, skip cycles altogether, or refuse to progress from one cycle to the next. Swapping out the defective timer for a new one is not difficult and can be done in a short amount of time.
How to Replace the Timer in Your Washer
Unplug your washer, and wear work gloves and safety goggles during the repair to protect yourself from getting injured.

To begin, remove the knob and the knob skirt from the timer shaft. Using a flat head screwdriver, pop out the center portion of the knob, and take off the clip that holds the knob to the timer shaft. Now pull off the knob and the spring underneath it. Slide off the knob skirt to gain access to two screws which secure the timer to the console. Remove the screws, and place them somewhere safe so you don’t lose them.

Now it’s time to open up the console. On the top of the console, you’ll find two screws holding it together, take out those screws and tip the front of the console forward to expose the faulty timer.

Disconnect the wire harness connector from the timer, and remove the malfunctioning part from your washer.

Hook the wire harness connector onto the new timer. Make sure to push the connector on firmly; otherwise, the locking tab on the harness will not engage. Put the shaft of the timer through the opening in the console and reinstall the two screws which secure the timer to the console.

Line up the console with the control housing and reattach the screws you removed earlier from the top of the console.

Place the knob skirt back onto the timer shaft. Next, slide the spring and knob onto the shaft and attach the clip to the end of the shaft to hold the parts in place. To complete the repair, reattach the center portion of the knob.

Plug your washer back in, and throw in a load of laundry to test the new timer out.
