Refrigerator Repair

What is Causing Water to Leak From a Refrigerator?

Water leaking from any appliance is a major worry. It can cause mold to grow and pooling water will cause damage to floors over time. However, unlike a washer or dishwasher, a refrigerator doesn’t primarily use water to serve its purpose. As such, there are only a small number of causes that are responsible for water leaking out from the appliance. This makes troubleshooting a quick affair.

Drain Pan

In many cases, if you just notice a bit of water every now and then, but not consistently, then it may be because of your drain pan. This catches the water that is melted during the defrost cycle. It is supposed to evaporate away, but if it is pooling and overflowing from a drain pan, you will want to investigate why your freezer is producing so much frost. The drain pan can also be cracked, something that usually happens when it is accidentally kicked.

You may also want to check the drain hole inside the actual refrigerator. This is a small hole, so it can become clogged with food particles, it will cause the drain water to overflow out of the appliance. Once unblocked, the problem will be fixed.

Water Supply Line

If your refrigerator comes with an ice maker, then it will have a water supply line. The supply hose itself could be damaged and it may be leaking. The inlet valve to the refrigerator could also be faulty and start leaking. If you notice that the water leak is more oriented towards the back of your appliance, then it is likely a water supply problem. You can easily deduce this by actually touching the items. They should not be wet to the touch, and if they are, it means leaks.

This is usually a problem you can troubleshoot by yourself, but you may not know where to start when it comes to repairing it. If you need to get that refrigerator leak, or any other appliance problem fixed up fast, contact us today to see what Central Valley Appliance can do to help.
