Troubleshooting Hollow Ice Cubes

If your freezer comes with an ice maker, you may one day encounter a problem where your ice cubes end up hollow. This in and of itself isn’t necessarily a problem, but it can result in the ice cubes sticking together and generally means you get less ice per cube. This can be caused by a number of issues that you will want to check out.

Low Water Pressure

If your ice maker is slow to fill due to low water pressure, this means that the ice begins to freeze before it is actually full. Eventually, the water cannot get into the center, so it leads to hollow or malformed ice cubes. This can be an issue with household water pressure, or it can mean an inlet valve issue in your refrigerator.

It is also possible that the low water pressure is caused by a slight clog somewhere in the system. When checking hoses and inlets, typically you will find these clogs in the filters located inside them. If you have hard water, limescale clogs can also be found deeper in the system.

Faulty Thermostat

Similar to low water pressure, if the temperature in your ice maker is not optimal due to a faulty thermostat, then the ice cubes will form incorrectly. If you suspect this, the only real course of action is to test the thermometer for faults with a multimeter to determine if it is the cause.

Unlevel Appliance

While this can cause malformed ice cubes, they may not exactly be hollow. If the refrigerator is tilted, even a little bit, it creates an uneven surface in the ice maker. You will find that the ice cubes come out lopsided or may even be stuck.
