How to Replace Your Whirlpool Refrigerator’s Rollers

Most refrigerators come with rollers to make shifting or moving the machine easier. But if the rollers jam or crack, you can easily replace them. Order replacement rollers with a part number of WP2166108 for Whirlpool models and follow these steps.

No matter what appliance you’re repairing, your first step should always be to separate the appliance from the power source. Even if you are not repairing or disconnecting any electrical parts, this step keeps you and the surrounding area safe.

During the course of the repair, you will be tilting the refrigerator to the side. So remove any loose, breakable items and the refrigerator drawers.

First, remove the grill at the bottom of the refrigerator. On both corners of the plate behind it, you will see adjustable bolts that change the height of the rollers. Rotate these until the refrigerator is fully lowered and then remove the bolts.

Next, remove the rear access panel located on the lower back of the refrigerator. Set it aside. Then remove the four bolts (two in the front and two in the rear) holding the metal base of the refrigerator. Once the base is fully loosened pull on the rear lip until it moves half an inch or so back, clearing the front rollers.

Tilt the refrigerator slightly and slide a three-inch block under the side of the machine to keep it at an angle. The base plate should not be propped on the block.

At this point, you can remove the axle holding the roller in place and then pull the front roller free. Then push the new roller into position. Fix it in place by sliding the axle through the holes in the base and roller.

If you need to replace both rollers, repeat steps 4 and 5 on the other side of the refrigerator.

Once the front roller(s) are in place, remove the block so the refrigerator stands straight. Push the base back into position and tighten it with the four bolts. Then replace the rear access cover. Go to the front of the refrigerator and replace the adjusting bolts. Rotate them until the rollers have clearance and the refrigerator is level. Then put the bottom access panel back in position.
