How to Replace A Cracked Ice Maker Fill Tube in Your Whirlpool Refrigerator

The ice maker fill tube in your Whirlpool refrigerator model WRT541SZHV transfers water from the water supply line to the ice maker. A cracked fill tube can cause a leak in your appliance and prevent your ice maker from producing ice. If you believe the fill tube in your refrigerator is damaged, follow the repair guide below to replace the malfunctioning part.

Appliance Repair Safety Rules

  • Before getting started on your refrigerator repair, unplug your appliance and turn off its water supply valve.
  • During the repair, protect your hands and eyes by wearing work gloves and safety goggles.
  • If you don’t think you can safely finish replacing the ice maker fill tube, please stop what you’re doing and contact an appliance repair technician.

How to Uninstall the Ice Maker

Open the freezer door, and slide the ice bin out of the compartment. Using a 1/4″ nut driver, unthread the bottom screw holding the ice maker to the freezer wall. Then, loosen the top screws until there’s enough space to lift the ice maker mounting bracket and the ice maker up and off the screws. Place the ice maker on the shelf in your freezer.

How to Uninstall the Ice Maker Fill Tube

With the ice maker removed, you can now see the fill tube extension. Pull the extension off the fill tube and place it next to your ice maker. Then, head to the back of your refrigerator to disconnect the water line from the fill tube. Before you can pull the waterline and fill tube apart, use a pair of pliers to slide down the clamp holding them together. Once the clamp is out of the way, pull the water line out of the fill tube. Next, unthread the screw securing the tube to your refrigerator, and then uninstall the tube from your appliance.

How to Install a New Ice Maker Fill Tube

Before you throw away your old fill tube, remove the gasket that sits between the tube and the refrigerator, and then slide it onto your new fill tube. Once the gasket is situated, insert the fill tube into the opening on the back of your refrigerator. To secure the part, replace its mounting screw. Next, reinstall the waterline and slide up the clamp that secures the line to the fill tube. Then, finish the installation process by replacing the tube extension.

How to Reinstall the Ice Maker

Pick up the ice maker, and place the mounting bracket on the two top screws. Then, using your 1/4″ nut driver, tighten the screws. To finish securing the ice maker to the freezer wall, rethread the bottom screw. Next, slide the ice bin back into the compartment, and close the freezer door.
