How Often Do You Need to Change a Water Filter in Your Refrigerator?

If your refrigerator comes with water features, it comes with a water filter to help protect those features and the people that use them. The water filter helps not only produce you clean water to drink, but it helps keep the water clear when producing ice as well. The water pumped into your refrigerator should be fairly clean, but it is not perfect. For all the particles that may find themselves into the relatively narrow waterline of your refrigerator, the water filter makes sure they never get there. However, there is one question that all refrigerator owners have – when do you change the water filter?

It really doesn’t matter what refrigerator filter or brand of refrigerator you have, the answer to this question is usually the same. You will want to change the water filter every six months or at least every year. If you let it go for longer, you may notice a change in water flavor and a few problems that can come from not changing the filter, such as restricted water flow and even the introduction of bacteria growth from the filter into your water line.

As for where your water filter is located, you will find it, in most cases, underneath your unit, and behind a protective kick panel. Some newer models will likely also have the water filter access clearly labeled and easy to get into. This was done because so many people in the past forgot about the water filter, so now manufacturers want to make sure you do not.

While changing your water filter is something you can and should do by yourself, if your refrigerator is manifesting issues that you don’t think you can fix yourself, we can help. Contact us today to see what Central Valley Appliance Repair can do to help you get your appliances up and running again.
