How to Remove and Replace Stove Burner Knobs

In most cases, the knobs on your stove will last the lifetime of the appliance. They are made of heavy heat-resistant plastic or stainless steel which makes them very sturdy. However, unexpected accidents can happen and they may need to be replaced. Most commonly, knobs on your stove need to be replaced when the actual markings are worn or scrubbed off them. This is a common issue with the plastic knobs as years and years of cleaning can see the markings removed. The only real solution, in this case, is to replace them.

How to Remove Stove Knobs

In most stove models, the control knobs can be pulled right off. In gas stoves, although they control the flow of gas to the burners, you do not need to shut off the gas before removing the knobs. You will, however, want to make sure the knobs are firmly in the off position. They will turn no further in that direction so you can just pull them out without worrying about activating the gas or electricity to the burner.

If the knobs are actually stuck, you can wrap a bit of flexible wire on the prong behind it and tug in an effort to remove them. If the knob is stuck, you want to be very careful when doing this. Too much pressure up or down may bend the prong or damage other parts in the ignition system. If it is stuck pretty strongly, you may want to call a professional out just to ensure no further damage is done.

Once the stove knobs are removed, this is an excellent opportunity to clean behind them. A lot of grime can build up behind the stove knobs which can make them difficult to move. Once that area has been cleaned, the new stove knobs will slide right on to the prongs. You will need to make sure the groove is aligned with the proper prong before it will fit on.
