How to Change The Power Cord on Your Oven

Hardwired to your appliance, the power cord on your oven is designed to last the entire lifetime of an oven. However, while this means your power cord won’t malfunction itself, accidents can happen. If the power cord gets nicked during some remodeling or has been the nibbling target of rodents, it can become damaged and may need to be replaced.

Yet, changing a power cord may seem like a daunting task because it is often not a part that needs fixing all that often. Luckily it is about as easy as any other repair task when you know what to do.

How to Replace an Oven Power Cord

Start by unplugging the oven power cord from the outlet. If the cord has substantial damage, it may be safer to first turn off the power to that outlet from the circuit breaker. Next, you will need to be able to access the back of your oven. Some models may have an access panel for easy access to the power cord area, but most models will require you to take off the entire back panel.

Once you have access to the power cord connection, you will want to make note of the positioning of the wires. They should have designated colors that you will want to remember for re-installation. If you purchase the exact cord as recommended by your manufacturer, the colors will be the same on the new model.

The wires connecting the power cord can be removed by loosening the screws at the terminal and removing the cords. Once the wires are disconnected, the old power cord can be removed and the new one can be installed. Be sure to match the colors when securing the new wires. Once the oven is reassembled, turn on the circuit breaker and test the oven to make sure power reaches the heating elements.
