Replacing a Faulty Turbidity Sensor in the GE GDT655SSJ2SS Dishwasher

In dishwashers, they don’t work by setting predetermined cycle lengths. Instead, dishwashers use a turbidity sensor to analyze the clarity of the water. If the water is still hazy or above a certain amount of undissolved solids, the dishwasher will continue the washing and rinsing cycle until the water is clear. When a turbidity sensor is going bad, your dishwasher will run for much longer periods of time. GDT655SSJSS

In fact, a bad sensor may mean that your dishwasher will run indefinitely because the sensor still thinks the water is dirty. If your dishwasher is running much longer than normal, it may be beneficial to replace the turbidity sensor.  Before you begin, you will need to:

  • Disconnect your washer from the power source
  • Turn off the water to your dishwasher
  • A nut driver set
  • A flathead screwdriver
  • A replacement turbidity sensor for the GE GDT655SSJ2SS

After shutting off the power and water to your dishwasher, you will want to use a nut driver to remove the screws on each side on the bottom black toe panel of the dishwasher. Once complete, remove any insulation.

The turbidity sensor is located underneath the dishwasher and will look similar to a red cap with wires attached. It is located on the pump housing.

Using your flathead, rotate the old turbidity sensor counter-clockwise and it will detach. Afterward, disconnect the wire connector and remove the old sensor fully.

You are now ready to install the new sensor. Be sure to attach the wires before reattaching it to the pump housing as it will be difficult to seat them once attached. To attach the new turbidity sensor, you simply need to rotate clockwise until it does not rotate easily any further on the pump housing. Reassemble the bottom panel and do a test wash.

If you have done your test wash, but your dishwasher is still having problems, it may be time for professional repair. Contact us today to see what we can do to help you.
