Goodman Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps Recalled Due to Burn and Fire Hazard

The Goodman Company is a major supplier of residential and commercial heating and air conditioning units throughout the United States and Canada. While many people rely on products from The Goodman Company for their everyday comfort, their products have been subjected to several major recalls in recent years due to the risk that these products could cause injury or fires. The most recent recall was announced on March 1, 2018, and effects packaged terminal air conditioners and heat pumps (PTACs) sold throughout the U.S. and Canada. If you own a Goodman PTAC, here is everything you need to know about this recall.
The Product
The air conditioners and heat pumps affected were sold nationwide at Goodman dealers from January 2010 to February 2018. Prices for these units ranged from $700 to $1,400, and they were sold under the Goodman, Amana, York International, and Energy Knight brands. Overall, about 534,000 units affected by this recall were sold in the United States. The recalled units are beige and have the brand name listed on the control cover. There are several models affected, and you can find them listed here.
The Recall
These air conditioning and heat pump units were recalled at the beginning of March 2018 due to the fact that the outdoor fan motors can overheat, posing a burn risk and a fire hazard. Overall, Goodman has received nine reports of these PTACs catching fire, including one incident of smoke inhalation that required medical attention.
What You Need to Do
If you believe that your Goodman PTAC may be affected by this recall, the most important thing you can do is to unplug the unit and do not use it until you have the problem addressed. For units affected by the recall, Goodman is providing free repair kits as well as free installation by an authorized technician, which will prevent the unit from overheating. While our technicians are skilled at repairing air conditioners, it is best to contact Goodman directly in this instance as they will provide a free repair ensuring the safety of the recalled unit.
