Not turning on
If your Amana washer is not turning on, a few things could be at fault. Your washer might have a power supply issue, an issue with the door latch, or an electrical fault with the control panel. Try these steps if you encounter this issue:
- Make sure the washer is properly plugged into the power outlet.
- Ensure the power outlet is working by plugging a different appliance in.
- Check the circuit breaker to see if the corresponding breaker has tripped. If it has, move it to the “on” position.
- Make sure the door or lid of the washer is completely closed
- Check to ensure the display buttons are functioning.
- If you’re comfortable using a multimeter, test the control panel to ensure continuity. If not, it may need to be replaced.
Won’t fill with water
An Amana washer that won’t fill with water indicates an issue with the water supply. This could be your home’s water supply, or due to a blocked inlet hose or valve. To troubleshoot:
- Turn on other faucets in your home to ensure there isn’t an issue with the water supply. If the water pressure seems low, have it tested. Your washing machine needs a minimum of 20 psi to function.
- Make sure both the faucets (hot and cold) are connected to your Amana washer and are completely turned on.
- Remove the water inlet hoses and check for blockages or damage.
- Remove the water inlet screens (located at the washing machine end of the hoses) and check for buildup that may restrict water flow. Clean the screens, or replace them if necessary.
Not draining properly
A washing machine that isn’t draining properly is usually due to a problem with the drainage system—usually the hose, but sometimes the filter or pump. If water remains in the drum after the cycle is finished, your clothes will be too wet and may not be properly cleaned. To troubleshoot:
- Inspect the drain hose for kinks or pinches that might be stopping it from draining.
- Disconnect both ends of the drainage hose and check for clogs by running water through the hose. If there appears to be a blockage, use a length of wire to remove the clog.
- Make sure the drain hose is properly positioned at the correct height. Check your Amana manual for specifics.
- If your Amana washer has a filter or coin trap, clean it thoroughly. These are usually located behind a panel at the lower front of the washer and can become clogged with hair, lint, and small debris items that end up in the washing machine by mistake.
- If you’re confident doing so, locate the drain pump and test it with a multimeter to ensure it is functioning. If not, it may need to be replaced.
Stopping during spin cycle
A washer that stops during a spin cycle is usually due to an unbalanced load but can also be caused by excess water in the drum. If this occurs:
- Check to see if the load appears unbalanced. If all the laundry is on one side of the drum, manually redistribute the clothes so they’re evenly spread.
- Make sure you stick to recommended load sizes, as overloading is more likely to cause spin cycle issues.
- If your clothes appear wetter than usual, try following the above steps relating to drainage issues.
- If you are comfortable doing so, locate the spin sensor and use a multimeter to test if it’s functioning. If not, it will need to be replaced.
Making loud noises
While no washing machine is silent, increased noise or unusual noises often indicate something is wrong. Banging, screeching, or grating noises should always be investigated, as they can suggest loose parts or unbalanced loads.
- If you notice a banging noise or very loud operation during the spin cycle, it’s likely an unbalanced load. Redistribute the laundry and make sure that the drainage system is working properly.
- Check the drum for objects that shouldn’t be there, like coins or other pocket debris. These can be behind loud noises, and removing them from the drum is a super simple fix!
- If you’re comfortable taking apart your Amana washer, locate the drive belt and check for damage. A worn or stretched belt can cause thumping during the spin cycle and must be replaced.
- After checking the drive belt, inspect the drum bearings. Try spinning the drum manually and listening for a grating sound. This suggests the drum bearings are worn and will need replacing.
Leaking Water
Leaking water is one of the most stressful washing machine malfunctions, as it can cause expensive damage to your flooring and other parts of your home. If you notice a leak, make sure you deal with it immediately! Here’s what to check:
- Make sure the water supply hoses are properly connected. Loose connections are a common source of leaks.
- Ensure the drain hose is properly attached and placed. Inspect the length of the drain hose for holes or other damage.
- If you have a front loader, check the door seal, as this can become damaged or loose with age and cause leaks.
- If the leak is combined with excess suds, ensure you’re not overusing detergent or using the wrong type of detergent for your washing machine.
