Looks to me that the white residue is coming from the harness of the water. I treated few of the affected silverware with a solution of white vinegar and the white residue disappeared. I advised the customer to use (Glisten dishwasher cleaner) on a empty dishwasher every two-four week and half of tablespoon in conjunction with the detergent every time the dishwasher is used, and if she still having issues to call back for service.
