Whirlpool dishwashers have a unique filtration system that works to dampen sound, conserves energy, and efficiently use water. However, it is just like every other dishwasher brand in the way that it still needs to be cleaned on occasion. Filters in your dishwasher should be cleaned at least monthly to prevent food particle build-up and potential clogs. It will also keep the interior of your dishwasher clean and smell-free.

You will know it is time to clean your dishwasher filter if you see any sort of particles on the bottom of your dishwasher, you have noticed a decline in cleaning performance, or your dishwasher leaves a residue on your dishes. When it is time to clean the filter in your Whirlpool dishwasher, you will find it located on the bottom of the appliance near the lower spray arm. In some other brands, you may need to remove the lower spray arm, which just has plastic locking tabs that need to be disengaged to pull it off.

However, in Whirlpool appliances, you simply need to remove a cover and you will have access to the filter. It will look similar to a colander, and will just pull right out. You will then want to rinse it with warm water in a sink. Do not scrub the filter so you don’t risk damaging it. Because the dishwasher is such a wet environment, it should not be too difficult to remove the debris. Finally, you will want to remove any visible debris under where the filter as well before returning it.
